Nature in all its states

“Nature is a public woman. We must subdue it, penetrate its secrets and chain it according to our desires. We all know these few words of the philosopher Francis Bacon. We also know the “machine animals” of René Descartes or his conception of science that can “make us masters and possessors of nature”. These ideas are emblematic of a triumphant modernity that gives a primordial place to rationality, technology and the concept of progress. In a few years, the young twenty-first century has learned to fiercely criticize this heritage and has shown that the divide between nature and culture is no longer effective. This is what ecology, gender studies, but also the law that defined the crime of ecocide teach us. Through meetings, debates, shows, exhibitions and screenings, through a constant dialogue with artists, we will question nature in all its states, sowing small seeds for a more welcoming and harmonious common world.

Lise Couzinier, associate artist at Sciences Po Aix in 2022-2023

Lise Couzinier is a visual artist from the Aix-en-Provence School of Art. Committed to the defense of the environment, her creations show the world through a wide artistic palette: from sculpture to installation, photography and performance. In 2015, she imagined with Olivier Lubeck, L’écrioire à vertiges, an installation composed of 32 mirrors, a tribute to Buren, but also a political and ecological work. In 2020, she participated in the “Maskbook”, a participatory, artistic and citizen action on the health-pollution-climate link that uses the mask as a symbol. Then, she created for the exhibition “Tout naturel”, at the Espace Jouenne in Marseille, a forest of tree trunks woven into paper cords and suspended.

Associate artist at Sciences Po Aix for the 2022-2023 academic year, Lise Couzinier will lead, in partnership with the École supérieure d’art d’Aix-en-Provence, artistic practice workshops that will give rise to several cultural events during the year.
