Sciences Po Aix trains in five years, in a logic of “Grande Ecole”, students intended to exercise the functions of executives of the public and private sectors at the highest level of requirement, by combining a solid general culture with methodological learning and disciplinary.

Description of the programme

The Sciences Po Aix diploma is a multidisciplinary programme that is equivalent to a master’s degree. It is built on a foundation of fundamental knowledge in the social sciences. It is based on a progressive specialisation that allows students to refine their professional project and on innovative teaching practices that develop operational skills.

The five-year degree develops analytical and decision-making skills on the basis of a solid background in human and social sciences and specialised knowledge.

The first two years provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand systems, cultures and the major movements in history (economics, general culture, sociology, political science, history, etc.). In the second year, students choose pre-specialisation modules and option courses, the aim of which is to prepare them for their choice of specialisation in the fourth and fifth years, according to their aspirations and professional objectives. This diversity of teaching and the learning of a rigorous methodology lead them to build a capacity for critical analysis of the contemporary world.

The third year must be spent abroad. It is a decisive stage in the acquisition of proven bilingualism. It allows the student to join partner universities abroad and/or to discover professional, associative and institutional realities through internships.

The fourth and fifth years are devoted to anchoring studies to the professional world or to the world of research. The fourth year of the degree aims to extend the acquisition of the fundamentals of social sciences and the methodological tools of written and oral expression. In parallel with the fourth year of the Sciences Po Aix diploma, students follow a master’s programme (M1) which allows them to begin a high-level specialisation that completes the multidisciplinary dimension of the diploma. The fifth year is the year of specialisation: the student chooses, from among the courses offered, the one that will enable him or her to fulfil his or her professional project.

  • Mastery of public policies, public action, the institutional and political context at territorial, national, European and international level;
  • Mastery of the art of writing, synthesis and public speaking

  • Expertise in the field of competence conferred by the national Master’s degree.

Job opportunities

The diploma allows for rapid professional integration in the public, private or associative sectors. In addition, after obtaining the degree, students can pursue a doctorate.

Training organization

1st year

During the first year, the training offers introductory courses to the main disciplines of the social sciences. Balanced courses in law, history, literature, economics, political science, sociology and languages ​​are provided and are accompanied by a large number of method conferences.

This diversity of teaching and the learning of a rigorous methodology lead students to build a capacity for critical analysis of the contemporary world.

2nd year

The second year continues and completes the multidisciplinary teaching of the first year, by consolidating fundamental knowledge and by deepening certain subjects already covered: history, economics, languages, political science, sociology, history of political ideas, international relations.

In addition to this, there are pre-specialization modules and optional courses whose objective is to best prepare students for choosing their 4th and 5th year specialization of the Sciences Po curriculum, according to their aspirations and their professional goals.

 

Pre-specialization modules:

Public administration
This module covers the main branch of French public law, administrative law. After studying the different levels of administration in the first year, students will be able to specialize in public administration by focusing on the missions and means of the different administrations. The lecture is accompanied by conferences on method allowing to deepen and put into practice the topics covered.
Political analysis and strategy
This module analyzes the issues of public action and the different ways of governing from a political science perspective. It also addresses modes of collective action and provides an introduction to research methodology. The lectures are accompanied by conferences on method allowing to deepen and put into practice the topics covered.
Economics and management
This module aims to provide the keys to analysis relating to the operation and activity of companies. It introduces students to the use of economics, management and management tools. The lectures are accompanied by conferences on method allowing to deepen and put into practice the topics covered.

3rd year

The third year is the year of international mobility. The cultural and social immersion contributes to the open-mindedness as well as to the individual construction of the students. During this third year, the latter recorded decisive progress in the language of the host country, a necessary tool in a globalized world.

Three possibilities for international mobility are available to students:

 

Academic mobility
Students complete their two semesters, i.e. one year of study, at a foreign university in the country of their choice among the 140 partner universities of Sciences Po Aix (Europe, Asia, Africa, Americas, etc.).
Professional mobility
The student carries out two internships abroad during his year of international mobility. Internships take place in companies, international institutions, administrations or NGOs. All sectors of activity are accessible.
Mixed mobility
The student opts for a mixed course including a semester in a professional internship in a company, an international institution, an administration, an NGO or a French representation abroad, and a semester in a foreign university.

4th year

The fourth year of the diploma aims to extend the acquisition of fundamentals in social sciences and methodological tools for written and oral expression. In parallel with the fourth year of the Sciences Po Aix diploma, students follow a master’s course (M1) which allows them to begin a high-level specialization that completes the multidisciplinary dimension of the diploma.

Master 1 course

 

  • Public careers
    This course offers students the possibility of preparing a diploma allowing them to acquire the fundamental knowledge necessary to obtain a category A administrative competition and the methodology of the competition tests (dissertation, summary note and oral presentation).
  • Political dynamics and changes in societies
    This course trains students in a comparative politics considered, not only as an essential method of analysis of the social sciences, but also as an essential element for a good knowledge of the local, national and transnational contexts within which the political, social and religious unfold.
  • Expertise in international affairs
    This course prepares for all functions related to the globalization of economies. Intended for future multi-skilled managers, the training includes lessons to identify and analyze the challenges of globalization in economic, financial and technological matters, while providing an apprenticeship in the basic instruments of international expertise.
  • Expertise in international relations
    This course prepares for professions linked to international relations. The course offers lessons devoted to the challenges of globalization in political, diplomatic or economic matters, and contributes to learning methodologies that facilitate decision-making and action on an international scale.
  • Geostrategy, Defense and International Security
    This course provides students with the skills required for management careers in the civil service of the Ministry of Defense or careers in the analysis of politico-military crises, more broadly in sectors of international activity related to security activities ( arms industry, for example).
  • Information professions: communication, media, lobbying
    This course provides training for information professions. It offers courses devoted to cross-cutting issues of production and social exchanges of information from a multidisciplinary perspective.
  • Cultural policy and sponsorship
    The training is positioned on the dual sector of cultural policy and public and private funding of culture. It responds to the new challenges of the professionalization of culture, the internationalization of cultural exchanges and renewed co-production relationships with private actors (sponsorship and foundations).
  • European policy and transnational cooperation
    This course trains the public affairs executives of the European and Euro-Mediterranean area of ​​tomorrow. In a world where all public action simultaneously has a local dimension and an international perspective, it prepares these future professionals for concrete public governance.

5th year

The fifth year is organized according to different methods from the other years. It aims to finalize a multidisciplinary training while offering students a specialization adapted to their ambitions and their professional project. The student pursues a master’s degree at Sciences Po Aix in order to complete his specialization. On request, they can also integrate the specialization of another Sciences Po or continue their studies in France or abroad.
